I want to take this opportunity to welcome back our staff and students as the Grants/ Cibola County Schools begins the 2016-2017 academic year.  There are many exciting things occurring this year, as well as new faces in our teaching ranks and changes in our administration.

To begin with, the school district has begun implementation of a Strategic Plan adopted by the  Board of Education in April of this year.  The Plan will be posted for your review on the District website, but in general, the strategies developed by our Administrative Team focuses on academic improvement across the spectrum and expanding our teacher pool.

The Board and the district Leadership Team are currently working on another plan: The Facilities Master Plan is being updated for its five year renewal as required by the Public Schools Facilities Authority.  We will be meeting with constituents from both east and west sides of the District for input on prioritizing the needs of our facilities.

We also have a brand new school.  Los Alamitos Middle School has been built anew and configured in a way with input from community, students and staff.   The ribbon cutting will be on Monday August 8th at 4:00 PM and students will begin school on Thursday of that week.

We have two new principals, both of whom are coming up through the ranks of our faculty.  Mark Head is the new principal of Cubero and Seboyeta Elementary Schools.  Mr. Head brings 10 years of teaching and academic coaching to this position.

After many years of service to Mesa View Elementary as its principal, Mr. Mike O’Connell has decided to step down.  In his place steps in Ms. Jennifer Griego, who brings several years of teaching experience as well as 2 years serving as the Dean of Students for both Milan and Mt. Taylor Elementary Schools.   Both of these new principals were selected by committees comprised of teachers, parents and other staff.

We look forward to a new and exciting year at the Grants/Cibola County Schools.
